Flexibility refers to the ability of a muscle or muscle group to lengthen passively through a range of motion. Think of a static hamstring stretch: the muscle is being elongated, often with external assistance — your hands, a strap, or gravity. Flexibility is a property of the muscle tissue itself.
Mobility is the ability to move a joint actively through its full, functional range of motion — under your own muscular control. A mobile hip doesn't just stretch wide; it can generate force and maintain stability at the end range. Mobility involves muscles, tendons, joint capsules, and the nervous system working together.
A person can be highly flexible but poorly mobile — a common pattern in those who stretch frequently but don't train strength through range of motion. The reverse is also possible but less common.

How to Train for Each

Flexibility
The ability of a muscle or muscle group to lengthen passively through a range of motion. It reflects the physical properties of the muscle tissue rather than active joint control.
Mobility
The ability to move a joint actively and with control through its full, functional range of motion. Mobility involves muscles, connective tissue, joints, and the nervous system working in coordination.
Static Stretching
A flexibility technique in which a muscle is held in a lengthened position for an extended period, typically 20–60 seconds. Most effective after physical activity when muscle tissue is warm.
PNF Stretching
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation — a stretching technique that alternates muscle contraction and relaxation to improve passive flexibility, commonly used in rehabilitation contexts.
Range of Motion
The full arc of movement possible at a joint. Range of motion can be passive (assisted by an external force) or active (produced by the individual's own muscles).
Loaded Stretching
A mobility training approach that adds progressive resistance at the end range of a movement, aiming to build both flexibility and strength simultaneously in a lengthened position.
Training Flexibility
- Static stretching — holding a position for 20–60 seconds — is the most well-studied method for improving passive muscle length. It is generally most effective when done after activity, when tissues are warm.
- Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) — a technique alternating contraction and relaxation — can produce faster gains in flexibility and is often used in physical therapy settings.
Training Mobility
- Dynamic movement — leg swings, hip circles, controlled arm rotations — trains the nervous system to access range actively. This is also an effective warm-up strategy.
- Strength through range of motion — exercises like deep squats, Romanian deadlifts, or controlled hip hinges — builds the muscular control that makes range of motion usable and durable.
- Loaded stretching — gradually adding resistance at end ranges — is an emerging approach with growing support in sports science literature, though it should be introduced carefully and progressively.
Neither type of training requires specialized equipment or long sessions. Even 10 minutes of intentional daily work can yield meaningful improvements in joint health and movement quality over time.
